Ophthalmology Services

You rely on your eyes every day, all day. You deserve the best eye care available to ensure your eyes are in the best health possible, and that any problems can be handled quickly. State-of-the-art eye care and procedures are available at Ashe Memorial Hospital.

Routine Eye Exams


Ashe Memorial Hospital has partnered with Western Carolina Eye Associates to offer comprehensive eye exams for all ages conveniently on our hospital campus. Your eyes will be examined to address any potential health concerns and your vision will be checked so it can be corrected by eyeglasses or contact lenses if necessary.

Optical Shop


Should you require corrective lenses, the optical shop within our office boasts a large variety of frame styles, including designer frames, at affordable prices. Our full-service optical lab performs lens edging, tinting, cutting, sizing and assembly on-site. This allows us to deliver highly personalized service, quality products, quick turnaround times and lower costs for our patients.

Contact lenses are also available. Our team of optometrists will work with you to find a lens that is comfortable and delivers the most precise vision possible.

Ophthalmologic Surgery


If you need eye surgery, you can get the care you need at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Our ophthalmologist performs in-hospital procedures including:

Cataract surgery, a procedure that involves removing your eyes natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens to relieve cloudy vision.
Yag capsulotomy, a procedure that uses lasers to improve your vision after cataract surgery.
Corneal transplant, also called keratoplasty, a procedure that replaces part of your natural cornea with donor tissue.
Blepharoplasty, a procedure to revise droopy eyelids that are affecting vision.
Trabulectomy, a procedure for patients with glaucoma that aims to lower the intraocular pressure in the eye.

Procedures available in the Western Carolina Eye Associates office include:

Foreign body removal, a procedure that involves removing a foreign body from the eye. Foreign bodies in the eye are often the result of an acute accident or from working with wood, sand, metal or a similar substance over time.
Placement and maintenance of punctal plugs, devices that block the tear ducts of the eyes, preventing liquid from draining. This is one treatment option for dry eye.
Corneal scraping to remove diseased or damaged cells from the surface of the cornea.
Tear duct irrigation to clear a blocked tear duct.
