Dr. Melinda Wonsick provides full-spectrum care for patients of all ages

The daughter of a Lutheran minister and a former high school guidance counselor, Dr. Melinda Wonsick discovered very early on the importance of helping those in need.

Growing up, she watched her parents continually build relationships and give back to the communities they were fortunate enough to call home. Those experiences propelled Dr. Wonsick's desire to one day forge her own similar path.

But it wasn't until she met a couple who practiced family medicine out of a small house in her hometown that Dr. Wonsick felt that initial pull toward the medical field. The couple divided up their patients with the wife mainly seeing the women and children while the husband took care of the men. Dr. Wonsick looked up to her doctor not only as an individual, but also for the role she played within the community.

Now years later, the Ohio native is helping define the role of family medicine providers here in Ashe County. Dr. Wonsick provides full-spectrum care for patients of all ages, including obstetrics, as a physician for Mount Jefferson Family Medicine.

"I enjoy building relationships, taking care of families and working as a team at our office to help patients improve their quality of life," says Dr. Wonsick.

Dr. Wonsick joined Mount Jefferson Family Medicine in 2004 after searching for jobs that would allow her to not only practice family medicine but also provide obstetrical care.

At Mount Jefferson Family Medicine, Dr. Wonsick and her team take pride in being able to provide care for the entire family -- a service her patients truly appreciate. From pregnancy-related services and well child check-ups to primary care and preventive healthcare services, Mount Jefferson Family Medicine offers a wide variety of high quality services to meet the needs of the community.

"I really love it all, but I have to say I have truly enjoyed taking care of pregnant patients and their babies; helping them achieve a healthy and safe pregnancy and then watching the children grow up in our practice over the last 17 years as we have taken care of the entire family" says Dr. Wonsick.

Dr. Wonsick obtained her bachelor's degree in biology from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio before earning her medical degree from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio in 2000. She then went on to complete a family residency and obstetrical fellowship at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio.

When she's not busy taking care of her patients, Dr. Wonsick enjoys spending time with her husband Kevin, whom she met in high school, and their daughters Rebecka, a sophomore at Ashe County High School, and Abbigail, a sixth-grader at Mountain View Elementary School, walking her dog, watching her daughters play sports, going to the movies and sitting by the fire.

"I enjoy the sense of community and preservation of family values that being a part of Ashe County has given us, and it has a wonderful small town feel where neighbors still help neighbors," says Dr. Wonsick.
