Ashe Memorial Hospital welcomes new pediatrician

JEFFERSON, N.C. — Ashe Memorial Hospital is pleased to welcome Dr. James Mortimer, a board-certified physician, to the team at Ashe Women & Children’s Health.

A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Mortimer brings more than 20 years of experience in pediatric primary care for children, ranging from newborn to adolescents. Beginning August 31, Dr. Mortimer will be at Ashe Women & Children’s Health four days a week.

“I enjoy interacting with the kids,” Dr. Mortimer said. “You never know what to expect. There are different challenges and flavors, if you will, when it comes to working with young people. They energize me and make me feel younger.”

Dr. Mortimer earned his Bachelor’s degree in biology from Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa., in 1993. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Ill., in 1997. Dr. Mortimer completed a Rotating Internship at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1998 followed by a Residency in General Pediatrics at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh in 2001. In 2022, Dr. Mortimer completed his MBA in executive healthcare/pharmaceuticals at Saint Joseph’s University, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Prior to joining the team at Ashe Women & Children’s Health, Dr. Mortimer was a staff physician for Butler Health System in Butler, Pa. and the CEO and Managing Physician for Next Generation Pediatrics, LLC. Most recently, he was the lead physician for UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics in Butler, Pa.

Located on the campus of Ashe Memorial Hospital, Ashe Women & Children’s Health is committed to transforming women’s healthcare in Ashe County. The clinic offers obstetric, gynecological and primary care services for women as well as pediatric primary care for children.

In his role, Dr. Mortimer will provide full spectrum pediatric primary care services to children, ranging from newborn to 20 years of age. In addition, Dr. Mortimer also specializes in prenatal visits, preterm births, ADHD management, asthma and allergy management, obesity management, among other areas. Dr. Mortimer also will be available for inpatient pediatric care and will be taking pediatric call as needed.
