Position Description: To perform independently, without direct supervision, medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analysis, to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Attend and participate in hospital and laboratory compliance inservices. FLSA Category: Non-Exempt

The above wage range reflects the minimum, midpoint and maximum hourly rate for this position. New employees are hired between the minimum and midpoint of this range. The initial wage offered will be based on qualifications and experience.

    Qualifications:
    Education: Special Vocational Preparation includes an occupationally significant combination of: vocational education (from a medical technology program), on the job training, continuing education in areas specific for this laboratory, experience in less responsible jobs which lead to the higher job serving in other jobs. Training must ensure that the individual has:
    The skills required for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation.
    The skills required for implementing all standard laboratory procedures.
    The skills required for performing each test method and for proper instruments use.
    The skills required for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration procedures related to each test performed.
    A working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.
    The sills required to implement the quality control policies and procedures of the laboratory.
    An aware ness of the factors that influence test results.
    Clinical Laboratory Scientist (NCA, ASMT) or Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Technologist (AMT, HEW) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT, ASCP, AMT) or
    Equivalent certification with educational requirement described in the Federal Register for supervising high complexity testing.
    If the Chief Technologist does not qualify as a director, technical supervisor, or is a doctor of medicine, the individual functioning as a general supervisor must meet the following requirements for education and experience:
    o Have earned a doctoral, master’s, or bachelor’s degree in chemical physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical terminology from an accredited institution and have at least one year laboratory training or experience or both in high complexity testing, or
    o Have earned an associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory from an accredited institution, have at least 2 years laboratory training or experience, or both
    o Have completed 60 semester hours of study in the sciences, which must include either 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of courses in chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology, or any combination. Must also have completed either an accredited clinical laboratory or medical laboratory training program (which may be included in the 60 semester hours) or three months of documented training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing. The above education is an equivalency of an Associate Degree. Can qualify as general supervisor with this equivalency and at least 2 additional years of laboratory training or experience in high complexity testing, or
    o On or before April 24, 1995 have completed a 50 week military medical laboratory training program or have graduated fro a medical laboratory or clinical laboratory training program accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, Commission on Allied Health Education Accreditation or other organization approved by HHS. This additional training may be acquired before or after completing the accredited or U.S. military medical laboratory training program, or
    o On or before April 24, 1995 have completed a 50 week military medical laboratory training program or have graduated from a medical laboratory or clinical laboratory training program accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, Commission on Allied Health Education Accreditation or other organization approved by HHS. In addition, this type of training requires two additional years of laboratory training or experience in high complexity testing. This additional training may be acquired before or after completing the accredited or U.S. military medical laboratory training program.
    CPR certification (or eligible for certification within the first 12 months of employment).

    Physical Requirements: Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
    Visual and hearing ability for patient care activities

    Standing for long periods, up to 8 hours
    Noise: light to moderate noise
    Good verbal and written communication skills necessary for job requirements.
    Weekend and evening work required.
    Ability to climb stairs when elevators are not accessible.
    Repetitive motion (i.e.: entering electronic data, bending, twisting, phlebotomy)

    Occupational Hazards:
    Potential for exposure to infections patients or materials is negligible
    Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including blood, urine, bodily fluids, and cleaning solutions).
    Potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items.
    Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used
    License Required:ASCP or AMT Medical Technologist

    Job Duties:
    1. Performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual’s education, training, or experience, and technical abilities. Tests performed in the following areas: Hematology/Coagulation (45%), Urinalysis (10%), Chemistry (30%), Blood Bank (5%), Serology (1%), Body Fluids (<1%), Specimen Collection and Handling (2%), and Microbiology (6%). Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
    2. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
    3. Communicates with customer service for any instrument that needs trouble shooting problems and can document findings and schedule service.
    4. Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performance.
    5. Demonstrates the capability to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems immediately or notify the Lab Assistant Manager, Lab Manager, or Pathologist.
    6. Documents all corrective action when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
    7. Immediately recognizes and reports critical test results, realizing any particulars normal’s related to age. Documents reports and critical values “called to” on report in Meditech 95%.
    8. Can accurately and efficiently carry out all responsibilities described for the phlebotomist. Phlebotomy is the responsibility of the Medical Technologist when the regular phlebotomist is unable to obtain blood or if the phlebotomist is not present or needs assistance.
    9. Reviews annually all laboratory policy and procedure manuals for revisions and updates. Must sign procedure manual annually showing review.
    10. Complies with the hospital-wide and lab specific policies on Infection Control and safety regulations.
    11. Performs any and/or all maintenance on instruments according to the manufacturer’s schedule and instructions and/or according to laboratory policy.
    12. Ensure the security of the departmental information at the end of each workday to protect confidential information.
    13. Demonstrates a willingness to learn new procedures or process by meeting goals from previous evaluation.
    14. Can demonstrate multitasking by planning, processing and/or prioritizing workload with accuracy with limited overtime.
    15. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Professional Requirements:
    1. Completes annual employment requirements such as annual employee health and Health & Safety Inservice commonly referred to as ADI.
    2. Maintains regulatory requirements listed below.
    3. Adheres to the Attendance Policy based on the standard outlined in the policy. Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
    4. Uses computerized punch system correctly to accurately record working hours.
    5. Attends staff meetings/inservices.
    6. Consistently represents teamwork by maintains good rapport with others for the achieving department goals, serves on committees and participates in activities as requested, and communicates effectively with others.
