Police Department

"The goal of the Ashe Memorial Hospital Police Department is to provide a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors," says James Hendrix, Chief of the AMH Police Department. The officers of the department are sworn through the North Carolina Attorney General's office. Local law enforcement agencies work closely with Ashe Memorial Hospital Police, to provide assistance or backup if needed, as will as with emergency disaster drills. "The department utilizes camera surveillance throughout the facility, and the staff work rotating schedules in order to provide adequate coverage for the hospital. The officer's duties include: routine patrols around the campus, providing assistance to visitors. The department also works with the Emergency Department on potential problem situations", says Hendrix.
Hendrix joined the AMH Police Department in 1999. He's been in law enforcement since 1993, and served with the West Jefferson Police Department until 1997, and then as head of security at Jefferson Landing. He also operated a private security company called High County Special Police providing residential and commercial police protection.
"The way we run our department is very public relations oriented," he said. "We have a comfortable and easy-going attitude, but totally professional on the job. When people are here, they're sick, and it's our job to provide them with a secure environment in which to recuperate. We also deal with families and serve as a source of comfort and information. Feel free to come by or call the AMH Police Department at 846-0731."
