Mountain Family Care Center

The Mountain Family Care Center, a clinic for Ashe Memorial Hospital, has moved from it's former location behind Ashe County Middle School in Warrensville to the hospital campus in Jefferson. The clinic had been co-located with The Top Dog Clinic which servces the middle school. The Top Dog Clinic is still open during school hours to serve the student population, but the afternoon and evening service provided by Ashe Memorial Hospital through Mountain Family Care Center are now available at the hospital.
The new location is in the former office suite of Ashe Internal Medicine, staffed by Dr. Mark Zawodniak and his wife Susan, located on the back side of the physician office building on the hospital campus. The entrance to The Mountain Family Care Center is marked with a sign on the right as you drive around the back of the hospital toward Mountain Hearts. Hours for operation for The Mountain Family Care Center are Monday - Friday 1:00 - 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Dr. Mark & Susan Zawodniak offer hospitalist and internal medicine services by appointments Monday - Thursday from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
The Mountain Family Care Center staff can see patients for a variety of non-emergency conditions. Clinic staffers see patients for conditions such as strep throat, flu, minor injuries and urinary tract infections, but not emergency care. Blood work is referred to the lab at Ashe Memorial Hospital. The clinic is not a primary care physician's office so if a patient does not have a regular doctor, clinic staff can suggest follow-up care and provide the names of doctors within the system accepting new patients. Patients who need a regular physician can call and make an appointment for a checkup in order to become an established patient with that physician or medical office. Being an established patient is helpful when seeking appointments. Treatment is offered for non-emergency conditions such as respiratory and upper respiratory infections, bronchitis, ear infections, gastrointestinal problems, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, genitorurinary, minor injuries, abrasions, sprains, simple small burns, minor lacerations, minor eye injury, removal of simple foreign body, minor nose bleeds, rashes, and other minor problems. Patients can receive any needed injections, and physicals will be provided for business, sports and commercial drivers' license.
Mountain Family Care Center does not handle emergency care. Anyone with an emergency such as breathing problems, chest pains, broken bones, severe lacerations, or any potentially life-threatening condition should go directly to the Emergency Department at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Patients are encouraged to make appointments at Mountain Family Care Center, but walk-ins are also accepted. Those with appointments will be seen first unless someone comes in with an acute condition. The procedure involves going first to the front desk to check in. The patient will be asked if he or she has previously visited the clinic. New patients will have some paperwork to fill out, and anyone with changes to that information will need to make note of those changes. Patients are asked to bring insurance cards and a list of current medications. Patients will sign in and be seen in the order in which they arrive with appointments going first.
In the billing procedure, a patient will be asked about co-pay and deductible payments for insurance. These payments are requested at the time of service. If the patient cannot pay at the time of service, he or she will be asked to make payment arrangements and complete a financial analysis form. No one is turned away because they cannot pay. This center is not an extension of the hospital Emergency Department, but a health clinic that fits the need of non-emergency care. For true emergencies, call 911 or go directly to the hospital Emergency Department. For further information about Mountain Family Care Center, call 846-6322.
