Medical Library

As head of the library, Ms. Cooper keeps close watch on the facility's resources, constantly updating medical journals and medical books, and also attending annual AHEC workshops to update her skills in library services. "Our library mission is to further the Ashe Memorial Hospital and AMH Segraves Care Center's mission by providing to our medical staff and employees basic library and other health information services that meet the informational, educational, and when appropriate, research related needs," Cooper said. Available through Northwest AHEC LINK are the following: Computer generated literature searches from a variety of health care and administrative data bases performed by a professional librarian; access to a larger textbook, journal, and index collection in Boone; in-house access to a medical librarian, who visits Ashe Memorial Hospital monthly; access to electronic Table of Contents services; access to textbook and journal collections from 35 health care and educational institutions located throughout Northwest AHEC's 17 county service area, including the Carpenter Library at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and workshops or individual training on how to access medical information on the internet. AHEC Digital Library which allows individuals access to a wide variety of well-known electronic textbooks and journals, and consumer health at the convenience of their desktops, on their personal computers.
Among the services available through Northwest AHEC is the provision of continuing education and training programs such as seminars, workshops, and off-campus advanced degree programs. They also provide access to a large collection of books and videos obtained through a Duke Endowment grant, related to our growing Hispanic population. "Probably the most amazing thing about the LINK services is the speed with which they are able to provide the answers and information. Ready access to faxes and high speed internet connection, along with increasing digitization information, and the network of Northwest AHEC libraries and staff, all working together to provide our clinicians the information they need to provide the best in medical care, at the time they need it," Cooper said.
